Tiger Max Urethane Rollers
Menges Roller Company has developed a urethane for urethane rollers that offers several benefits over traditional urethane from other roller companies. Our trade name for our new urethane product is Tiger Max. Tiger Max is thermoplastic polyurethane and gives some excellent advantages over the traditional polyurethane in several areas, physical properties, processing advantages and sustainability. Physical properties compare almost exactly but as we move forward, sustainability is a word that all of us are addressing.
Urethane rollers have always been a processing nightmare. The curing agents in the past MDI specifically turned out to be carcinogenic and several plant personnel and even owners of urethane roller companies have died as a result of processing. Grinding the urethane rollers produced airborne MDI dust which was ingested unknowingly and over the years is suspected of causing cancer in plant personnel.
The Tiger-Max compound is a temperature sensitive plastic urethane that is dried like urethane in a desiccant dryer then vacuumed into the extruder melted and extruded out on to the roller core. Once cooled the roller is ready for finishing. In the finishing process, the over build can be recycled. This means the compound is pelletized and then mixed with virgin material and used again. Rollers with urethane covers that come back to Menges Roller for re-covering can also be recycled and the Tiger-Max thermoplastic urethane can be used again when mixed with virgin material. The problem with rubber vulcanite is that once it is cured from a raw state the process cannot be reversed. Polyurethane uses a catalyst to cure the 2 parts of the matrix, once catalyzed the process cannot be reversed. Although there are emerging secondary uses for these remnants of roll coverings. Quantities are much higher than a location can produce to be considered by rubber recycling companies.
Urethane Rollers & Environmental Responsibility
Those roller companies not using Thermal Plastic Urethane's for urethane rollers are filling up landfills with the discarded urethane that they remove for their customers in order to apply a new covering. The environmental impact of this process is important.
Thermal Plastic Urethane does have some limitations. One is that it cannot run at elevated temperatures as it loses stability at 250 degrees Fahrenheit. However, most urethane rollers in their applications run under that temperature. TPU (Tiger-Max) has been used in several by our customers in the Steel Processing, Converting, Printing, Box Board and other areas. The best applications for urethane rollers, the use of Tiger-Max is in the areas of extreme wear resistance, cut and abrasion resistance, high tear Strength, chemical and ozone resistance. Tiger-Max is the first sustainable roller covering used for urethane rollers in the world today.
