Silicone Roller Applications
Silicone rubber was designed in the early days of electric motors and generators as it had a better insulating quality then rubber used during the time. Since that time the use of silicone has expanded. A silicone roller is critical in many industries with extreme heat or ozone applications.
The most common application for a silicone roller is in high heat applications like Plastic Film Extrusion where many physical properties of silicone are required as heat resistance and release. Release is the property of not allowing things to stick to the silicone rollers covering. Today, many complex applications of creating several layers in converting or packaging require silicone rollers. Customers do not want the substrate being processed to stick to the surface of their rollers. The physical properties in silicone rollers won’t stick to the package or process and will release after the silicone rollers nip has done its job.
Physical properties that are also in the makeup of silicone are extreme temperature resistance to -148 degrees f and up to 500 degrees f. Silicone also has good elongation and compression set properties.
A silicone roller is used in a myriad of industries but most commonly in Packaging, Converting, Laminating and Coating for its great properties or heat resistance and release properties.

-Excellent weatherability ie silicone caulk for windows and doors, gas permeability and radiation resistance
- Silicone has low Hysteresis (Hysteresis from the rubber dictionary)- Hysteresis is the amount of energy absorbed when a rubber is stretched and the amount released when relaxed. High hysteresis in Silicone Rollers application would indicate low resilience. Silicone has low hysteresis which means the rubber is very resilient which also lends itself to a good tendency in silicone rollers.
Silicone does not have everything. Applications that silicone would not be a strong compound for include:
-Applications were a heavy load is placed on the roll
-Heavy wear applications poor abrasion resistance
-Applications where the compound is susceptible to tear
